Cannot receive abc1, Loewe IDTV tuner

I recently purchased a very expensive DVB-T upgrade kit for my Loewe Aconda TV, and fitted it.

The upgrade does not support MHEG-5, therefore digital text based facilities/ channels are unavailable.

However, I can't get the TV to find the new "abc1" channel when it's broadcasting. This is a complete mystery, as all other channels are recieved with good quality (We are very near Crystal Palace), and my Sony digibox, uesd for recording, on the same aerial recieves the channel perfectly!

Is there anything odd/special about the way this channel is broadcast, that would cause it to be missed by the tuner?

Has anyone else experience of this?

I have spent ages with all the manual tuning menus, trying to get the set to see the channel, but no luck!

Many thanks!

Do you get all the other English services from Multiplex A? Check here

Maybe there is a limit on the number of services the tuner is capable of handling either on an individual mux or in total. You will probably have to hassle Loewe to get it sorted.

Someone on AVFORUMs is having the same problem - try asking there as well.

Sounds to me like a firmware problem. Can you get The Hits - Channel 18

If not you may have the same problem some other IDTVs have had with 15 maximum services on a mux.

    On SDN

    C5, ABC1, Bidup, Pricedrop, Pay Porn, Pay UK Gold, 2xBI source, 2xDiscovery, 1xKids TV, Radio 1, 2, 3, 4

    16 Services!

Looks like you have a 15 service limit!

    Thanks guys,

I can receive all the other services on Mux A ok, and yes, I get "The Hits" ok.

I just tried deleting Radio1-4 and then re-scanning TV channels, but still no luck. I'll check out AV forums again - think that may be one of my own posts!

I'll try writing to Loewe about it.

Snap. Crystal Palace too. Even doing a full installation rescan the Loewe Dtv tuner is blind to ABC1. Its fine on my Pace Twin that my Loewe is plugged into.

Before purchase, I was told of missing interactivity. I like the EPG, other than the way that it orders programmes. I wish it also sorted by channel number and that programmes not transmitting at that time did not clutter up the start of the EPG. The series recording is so simple an idea but so useful. And I with there was the option to arbitorarily assign channel numbers, so that News24 was on channel 40 for instance.

Just out of curiosity, are you using the tuner for DSat too? If so, what sort of channels can you get? I don't know whether to go through the expense of getting a Satellite dish.

    Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear you are having the same problem with ABC1, - it must be a problem with the DVB software...

I've not had a chance to write to Linn yet about this problem - they told me that Loewe had no plans to add MHEG compatability to the software, being a complete re-write of the TV software too. However, I'm sure that Loewe would be tweaking the DVB software all the time, as they sell more sets. I just don't see them broadcasting updates - the cost would be prohibitive for so few customers... I have no idea how we'd get an upgrade if they didn't broadcast one! Out of interest, what version is your DVB software? (mine is DVB v2.3.0, DVB decoder v2 T, TV software v6.16)

I managed to shift all the channel numbers around onto the correct freeview numbers, by adding in blank channels (manual search & store on empty analogue frequencies), then moving them all about (only the 700's are now on incorrect numbers). I then made all the channels I wanted into favourites, and now only display favourites when you hit OK for a channel list!

I don't have satellite TV yet, although am considering it for the future. I have a vague recollection that somebody said the Dsat option was only available for germany, but by nature of satellite broadcasts, I am almost certainly wrong! Maybe I'll research that next!

Have you had any useful contact with Linn/Loewe yet?

    Ben

Where did you get the upgrade from ? My parents have a Loewe with a Pioneer OnD box. The built solution would be nice but I'm sure its very expensive knowing Loewe. I read they didn't included interactivity as the licensing costs were too much ?

Just a thought, which you might or might not have tried...

What time of day did you scan for channels to try and get ABC1? In another thread, someone reported that their box stored some of the TopUpTV channels because at the time they scanned, the channels were off air, and hence not marked as encrypted.

The abc1 stream, I think, is timeshared with one of the TopUpTV streams, so I'm wondering if perhaps the Loewe software is confused by a stream that may be marked at encrypted at some times of day - certainly if you scan for channels in the evening - and free to air at others.

Do you get any luck if you scan during the daytime, when ABC1 is showing programmes on that stream?

NX3 - I bought the upgrade from www.petermartin.co.uk, total cost including the required software update for the TV and VAT was £364... I fitted it myself, which was a lengthy and fairly involved (although well documented) process.

    for more info see:

Nigel - Thanks for the suggestion - sadly it's not picked up at any time of day. I think I've exhausted all possibilities - there has to be some sort of software bug preventing the channel from being found. My Sony digibox finds it straight away!

    Hi Ben

My TV software is as follows:

    Chasis: L2550/M
    S/W: V6.23

    DVB Decoder: 2TS
    S/W: V2.4.0

    DR+: V2.530
    Photoviewer: V2.0

The guy that I had spoken to a Linn has now left and im trying to open a line of communication with someone else, but they seel very reluctant to. My set was bought from Linn at Harrods which upsets the receptionist when she tells me to contact my retailler and I say that it is themselves.

I have a more serious problem where I, since installation of my 'free' Loewe Centros DVD recorder I get streaking from my external freeview box. It something wrong with my Xelos SL since I wan watch the same input in PIP and see a perfect input on the PIP screen and streaked input on the main screen.

I will be following up both issues, plus some minor ones, today by email and phone. I will post any updates.

As for MHEG interactivity, I was warned about this before I purchased. I have however founf a good workaround for lack of text which is to use the old text. When hitting text, I get a blank screen, but if I hit P+, I then get BBC1 teletext. This appears not to work when viewing from an external source though.

It doesn't matter what time of day I rescan, ABC1 remains invisible. I even did a manual scan through the MUX and could not see it. Oddly, I could see, but not receive, the TUTV channels. I do think your explanation is a good one that the encryption is affecting both.

DTV updates are available on the Astra satellite if you happen to have connected to that! Otherwise, my installer says that we will fit FOC.

    Ian,

Thanks very much for the useful info!

I seem to remember having a similar "streaking" problem with my Aconda, when viewing my external digibox looped through my dvd recorder. When watching with the DVD recorder on, tuned to the scart socket for the atached digibox, the picture was ok. On turning the DVD recorder off, the digibox picture appeared all streaky on the TV. I think I resolved this by turning off the option to immediatly display RGB signals in the TV setup.

It's interesting that your TV DVB software is of a higher version than mine - confirming my suspicions that Loewe will quietly continue tweaking the software as they manufacture new cards. I wish there was a way of downloading new versions off the net, and flashing the TV, or even somewhere you could buy a new chip! It's maddening that the software for a DTT card could be available on a sattelite service only!

If you find any way of upgrading this software, do let me know - My TV software was upgraded as a chip upgrade supplied by petermartin.com, for a £50 charge, necessary to install the DVB card. Loewe seem to be incredibly quiet about the upgradeability of their sets, which is bizarre, as that is surely one of their biggest selling points.

Again, thanks for contacting them about the ABC1 issue - I must do the same. I had a contact with Sam Johnson, at Linn, who emailed a reply that Loewe were only considering MHEG5 support for new models where it can be worked in at an early stage. Might try emailing him again. Do let us know if you get anywhere!

Can you direct me to any information about the Dsat upgrade for the Loewe sets, other than the confusing Loewe website? Where can this be purchased?

Thank you for a very interesting status report - I was considering this and it does sound expensive. I am a novice at understanding what is offered so here are a few basic questions.

    First my set-up:
Aconda Q2500/H with software v2.6 (seems quite old!)
    DVD/Tuner/5.1Amp via scart AV3
GbSat sat rcvr AV2 - drives moveable dish
    JVC VCR AV1

    1) Is Peter Martin the only supplier - surely there must be others offering the DVB-T cheaper ?
    2) If I buy this, apart from limited Digital TV, what am I getting?
    3) Assuming I upgrade the software - it sounds as though I have to pay the extra £50 for that too, can I use the TV to drive my Sat rcvr channels?
    4) - could I even do this now without any upgrade/hardware?
    5) How would I use the CAM - if I elected for that?

I love gadgets - it sounds as though quality is excellent, and the ease of keeping everything on a single remote is nice too. It's a big shame the interactive bits don't work - The price and this are swaying me away from the DVB-T option unlesss someone can convince me otherwise - Any comments are appreciated - sorry I'm a bit green at this!

As the owner of a Loewe TV,I was advised that the better, and cheaper, option was to buy a separate Freeview box.
For £149 one can purchase a Freeview PVR with 80 Gb hard disk drive which will benefit from periodic software updates.

Try the Linn department at Harrods - 020 7730 1234 - Ask for the Linn AV Department - its next to the AV department but is not the same. They are much cheaper then Peter Martin for accessories.

    For instance:

Xelos SL Wall mount - £75 Harrods, £99 Peter Martin
DTV Option - £250 Harrods, £299 Peter Martin
    Xelos DR+ recorder - £300 Harrods, £400 Peter Martin

Peter Martin may be cheaper for their sets, but they make their money on the options and accessories.

Had news from Loewe today that the guys in Germany have a fix for the ABC1 problem and will be available shortly. I couldn't however get an answer on how it is upgraded. I have a feeling that, short of having a sat dish pointing at Astra, it will be in the form of a prom upgrade.

Further to any earlier comments from myself regarding Loewe technical support, ie Linnsight, now that I am using a different email account to send (I think my free email account was geing blocked), their support is responsive and if they do not know the answer to something, will actively try and find out of you.
