It's official! Eurosport are starting a third channel called Eurosport 2 on January 10th 2005. The new service will include more action sports and programming aimed at a younger demographic.

In addition to this, badminton och bowling are two of the sports that will be shown. There will also be more hours devoted to live coverage of sports that today can't be show live on Eurosport. This new service will also include a running news ticker on screen during all programmes.

As far as I know, the new channel will be distibuted in Scandinavia. I don't know about any other countries at this stage.

I read about it in a Swedish media newspaper called Dagens Media. Here's the link, however, I don't think anybody here will understand it.

The Scandinavian version will most likely NOT be FTA.

Excellent news. Hopefully we will get proper coverage of winter sports, which are currently at the mercy of Italian football, tennis etc.

Here is a rough translation of the swedish text from the link above. Please note my swedish is not that great and I have had to do a literal translation.

There are no references that the channel will be broadcast outside Sweden.

    Eurosport lanserar ny kanal

    >Eurosport launch new channel

    >Eurosport launch an additional sports channel in Sweden. From and including the 10 January 2005, Europsort 2 will begin transmitting.

    > Eurosport has many rights which we can not show in full. For instance should we wish to show direct from the sporting event which currently is shown as a summary. This is where Europsort 2 comes in, says Märta Rydbeck, managing director for Euorsport in Sweden.

    >Eurosport 2 will also be used where large sporting events conincide.

    > But it will not deal with making a extension of the channel we currently have. We will produce something that has a value in itself, the the contents rights which we can not use in full today, says Märta Rydbeck.

    > She says also that Eurosport intends to buy rights exclusive to Eurosport 2.

It has always surprised me that Eurosport has not launched a second channel for its live coverage. They have the rights to so many events that there are always going to be clashes.

I hope the channel launches soon in the UK.

I'd imagine British Eurosport 2 would be launched pretty soon after if not the same time.

TBH the UK doesn't need Eurosport 2 as they just ought to use News to cover the live sports that overlap. News is just a loop anyways.
However British Eurosport ought to be scrapped as the lineup is pants most of the time.

I remember when Eurosport used to be great... had F1 coverage including qualifying and morning practise sessions... indycars (the original championship) with mansell....

    ahh those were the days

If this is to include all Eurosport networks across Europe, then damn it's about time!
Actually, maybe this stemmed from my idea?

I sent them an email a while back suggesting a ESP 2 channel (champcar fans here might remember this)
It's the only sane thing to do, as they have more rights than is sensible for the airtime they have available. Many times one live event has had to be cut short for another live event, and During the Olympics, all other sports were shoved out of the way altogether in many cases.
Last time they had champcars it always clashed with something else even though they had a live contract.

I hope this is for all Eurosport recieving countries including GB

This might be just what they are doing. No-one is watching Eurosport news so why not turn it into Eurosport 2?

There were stories doing the rounds a while back that NASN supposedly considered a second channel.

Apparently they decided against it as there wasn't sufficient coverage for a full time second service. But there were certain times when it would be advantageous (when one live event overuns for example, limiting coverage of another live event elsewhere starting) ...

(Perhaps an occasional interactive (red button) alternate service would make more sense) ..?

Ahh the good old days when I couldn't work out why if I was watching the F1 on BBC2, it would be delayed slightly on Sky.

How much does European Eurosport differ from British Eurosport?

Don’t forget that there has been live coverage of the World SuperBikes on Eurosport News, but sadly this was not shown in full screen.

Perhaps they could re-launch "Screensport" which was finally merged into the TF1/EBU-Eurosport (which was born when with the help of the European Commision, Screensport killed off the original SKY/EBU-Eurosport).
I think British Eurosport is made up of NTL -TF1/EBU Eurosport.

Is there any relationship between Motors TV and Eurosport other than both being based in France ??

ESPN is rumoured to be considering a pan-European live sports channel (not to be confused with Classic ESPN).

No Motorsport, but then I guess that's because it's a listing for January, and the prospect of a rolling news ticker doesn't appeal to me at all (Eurosport has enough on screen mess as it is!)

But hopefully this will end the schedule clashes that fill up 90% of Eurosport related threads here....... ;)

Is there any relationship between Motors TV and Eurosport other than both being based in France ??

The head of programming at Motors used to work for Eurosport.

But those two are the only links really.

Is it true that it's not launcing on Sky until later in the year ?

I am hoping that it is there for the Aussie Open tennis - so that all the winter sports end up on Eurosport 2 (where they belong).
