I believe he was known as Joe for a while, but usually uses his middle name of Duncan now. He's a producer, so I guess Zowie (pron. Zoe) is a bit much, even in his profession. Bowie isn't his legal surname so maybe Zowie wasn't his real name (explains why John Peel thought he was a girl when he was born though)!
Also, apart from Moon Unit, Frank Zappa called his second child Dweezil!!
