Possible new features for Sky+ before Christmas ????

Good evening to you all.

I apologise if this is old news, or has been posted before.

I have just stumbled across a piece of news reported today from Home Cinema Choice (John Archer), that news has been filtered his way of major new features being uploaded to Sky+ users. It goes onto say that these features, and the main one being Telephone Remote programming, could be made available before Christmas. It did not explain how this would be achieved, and whether the time scale is in fact realistic, however he was confirming this news as he spoke.

I would provide a link..................however I don't know how to do it :o

Worth a read though.

Regards James

i dont think this will happen before Christmas, for one reason. if it was gonna happen, sky advertise in advance to wet people's appetites, nothing has ben advertised by sky. its sort a marketing strategy sky use!

    but i coud be wrong.

    Just read the story again.

Not so optimistic now though. His original source is a Sky Sales Advisor !!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, however aren't these people the ones you speak to everyday who basically tell you anything, because they actually know nothing !!!

Sorry to any Sky Sales Advisors for any offence caused, however you could write a book sometimes on what you tell people just to get them off the phone.

It's a nonsense, how on earth will it discern you ringing up from some git in a call center trying to sell you something you don't want/need.. It would need CLI interpretation abilities and not answer the phone to you ringing up to tell the missus to get the dinner on!

What it really needs is the ability to browse to the EPG and TVGuide pages online via wifi or some other expansion card that you can chuck inthe back! IF it was wifi it would be awesome! Have the ability to see what's in your planner, delete stuff etc.. Oh how that would rock my world if it ever happened!

one feature that i am aware of that may be getting introduced is when having your phone line connected to sky+ and your phone rings, you can store certain numbers and your screen will display the person who it is that is calling you

    Doobry,

I believe that this can be done NOW! If SKY can dial into your box to download info then they can communicate with it to tell it to record.

    Dont see why not?

I would hope you would visit a website, login, make your selection and your box would receive the information/request via satellite. This would work in the same way as the message waiting light.

Of course if it does work this way it will mean Sky will be able to set your box to record anything they think you may wish to watch e.g. adverts!

    Automan.

BECASUE - Sky is NOT dialing in your box - NEVER EVER ... !

It's ALWAYS other way aroung - e.g. Sky will send signal to your card / box to "call home" and that's exactly what box will try to do.

So - if there will be any phone ordering of recording - it will work ONLY if you call to call centre and they'll then send signal to your box via the dish ... ;)

This can be done in one of 2 obvious ways, both by accessing a website or some other comms centre.

    1. A simple "record this" message is sent across the satellite to tell the Sky+ to record an item. There would however be no interactive aspect to this. The modem could/would dial out with a confirmation to limit resends. I think this is the most likely method.

2, A "connect" message is sent across the satellite to tell the modem to dial out. Once connected you would have full interactive comms with the Sky+ box. The downside to this could be the latency for the "connect" message to get to the box, when you match a viewing card Sky say the match can take up to 2 hours to take, clearly unacceptable.

If the expansion slot were use with say an ethernet card then instant access could be obtained via a broadband connection, no way before Christmas and also far to complicated for the average Sky user.

Sky sending the signal is most likely how they will do it, and would explain why recently, people are finding things in their planner that no one has put there and why recordings have been disappearing. Perhaps some form of testing, stray testing or something? I would provide a link pertaining to such problems, but I'm quite lazy.

Now you will have people wondering.

Watched a recording of Casualty from the Planner about 2 hrs ago. After watching and going to the planner to delete, I noticed Emmerdale for tomorrow evening had suddenly appeared in my planner set to record, complete with series link set.

I know for a fact that it wasn't there when we started to watch Casualty.

Better still use a pc anywhere in the world access the entire epg and your planner, set recordings (and delete recordings from planner if spece required??) why bother with a mobile pbone

    Now that would be excellent..

Version 1 will probably be text 101(1930-2000) to 80731 or something like that...but the concept has so many great variations.

The idea is excellent, but it cant see it happening, not in the near future, and certainly not before christmas. Unfortunately it all seems to have started from an over eager sales operator.

If this goes ahead, it would be a superb update. The 'phantom' planner inserts are interesting, would make sense, but again i doubt it is related. Prob just some tech fault rather than any behind the scenes testing, fingers crossed though...........

Sky+ software is just so behind TiVo! If you connect an ethernet or wireless card to the TiVo, you can set it up so that you can access TiVoWeb from any PC on the web and program the TiVo to record etc. TiVo also did a deal with the BBC to force a recording of a TV programme but it caused such an uproar that neither party was keen to try it again!

Remote 'via web' programming would be good. You can do this already with a Nebula DigiTV freeview PC card, as well as see a snapshot of whats on TV 'now' or an image from the analogue video input.

I gets my vote, as I spend a lot of time out of the country, and have to rely on the misses to catch anything I may want to watch.

Because you're likely to have your mobile phone with you most of the time.

The majority of times I've thought "damn, I've forgotten to set something" I've been nowhere near a PC.

Given the ability to book programmes 7 days in advance, it would seem unlikely that this would arise very often as a need.

The other day I had a "phantom" recording set with series link - I'm in London and watch BBC London, and this recording was a nature programme shown on BBC1 Northern Ireland - so I definitely didn't set it myself!
