HiDef TV – HDTV SECTION

 The European Information & Communications Technology Industry Association has announced a standard for HD Ready labeling of TVs, plasma screens and other HD displays. "The “HD ready” label is fully supported by Europe’s national broadcasters. More info :- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18570.html

Sony, has forecast that 20m European households will have high definition TV (HDTV) sets by 2008. HDTV set prices – currently at £2,000 – would continue to fall, making them more of an attractive proposition to the mass consumer market. “Once you show HDTV people are hooked, says Chris Deering, Sony’s European CEO. (From Digital TV Group)

 European HDTV pioneer Euro1080 is to launch a second service, HD-2, in June 2005, with the emphasis on pay-per-event. Gabriel Fehervari, General Manager of Euro1080 also revealed that the operator would be using MPEG-4 encoding from that time. In addition to Euro1080’s involvement with SES-Astra, Fehervari confirmed that he had secured distribution deals on alternative satellites such as Sirius, Hellas Sat and Turksat, as well as some 20 cable networks. (From Advanced Television.com & Colin Mann in London)

Toshiba has won a major victory in the battle to determine the standard for next-generation DVD’s with the endorsement by four Hollywood studios of its High Definition-DVD format. Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers their supported the HD-DVD format advocated by Toshiba and NEC. Universal Pictures said it would come out with titles in the format during the 2005 holiday season while Paramount committed to bringing content out on HD-DVD in 2006. The support of the Hollywood studios gives a strong boost to the Toshiba camp, which is competing with a group led by Sony to standardise the next generation of optical recording technology. Sony is leading a group of consumer electronics and PC manufacturers promoting the rival Blu-ray Disc format.

 The EBU Technical Committee has recommended that Emission standards for HDTV should be based on progressive scanning: 720p/50 is currently the optimum solution, but 1080p/50 is an attractive option for the longer term. Although there are strong technical arguments in favour of progressive scanning for emission, the EBU Technical Committee recognises that some broadcasters might wish to broadcast 1080I-programme material. As consumer electronics equipment (e.g. set-top boxes and displays) will accept both 720p and 1080I formats, broadcasters will be able to select either of these formats * even on a programme-by-programme basis. Taking into account that production and emission standards do not need to be identical, further EBU studies on Production standards for HDTV in Europe are in progress. This work is not intended to result in a recommendation for a single standard for HDTV production. ( From TeleSatellite)

Pace has announced plans to make high definition compatible set-top boxes available to satellite and cable operators across Europe. The DS840 digital satellite box offers an embedded Irdeto conditional access system to allow viewers to subscribe to the services of Euro1080, the HD channel launched in 2004. ( From Wotsat & D.S. Details:- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds15751.html )

Platinum Update: The Platinum Channel is the name for the HDTV channel and will feature the programming previously discussed on Digital Spy. (Another LWT exclusive) See Here:- http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board…ad.php?t=159632

 When SKY launches its HDTV service it will aim to have 7 HDTV Channels broadcasting in total. (Thanks Andyk22k)

Service-1 has just a blue screen on my digibox!

Can you still see the William Road Testcard?

I thought it may be to do with my box, but just checked on my FTA box and its the same! also if I scan the txp on it, it shows a channel called "6300" just as my digibox does! It also reports it as encrypted

I made a stupid mistake, because the parameters changed for the channel, i had to re-store it and when i went to do so, i looked at my list of test channels, which i wrote down because my printer had packed up:
For some reason, I got the frequencies for "6300" and "Service-1" mixed up! So when I was trying to re-store it, i got "6300" instead!!!

    Stupid Mistake :o

Irish Channel 6 gets licence from UK regulator

The Sunday Tribune reports that the proposed new Irish television broadcaster, Channel 6, has obtained a licence from UK media regulator Ofcom under the EU's Television Without Frontiers directive. The report says that the UK licence is being seen as a "failsafe" option in case the channel's current efforts to secure a licence from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland fail. In that case, Channel 6 would broadcast into Ireland by satellite from the UK.
