Sky's (EPG) overhaul
Sky's electronic programme guide (EPG) will get an overhaul. As the number of channels on the digital satellite platform has exploded, so too has the need to re-order and re-group them on the EPG. The 'old' EPG had 10 categories of programming in the main menu. The new EPG will re-group Sky's 480 channels—340 more than the number available when Sky Digital launched in 1998—over 16 categories, with new categories for lifestyle, religion, shopping, gaming and adult channels, and new separate categories for documentaries and radio stations.
The new EPG will have two menu pages instead of one. According to Broadcast magazine. Some channels will have to be re-numbered. Broadcast said channel providers would be able to review which category they are allocated over the summer before the new EPG line-up is finally agreed by the end of the year. Broadcast quoted a Sky spokesman as saying: "These enhancements are designed to improve navigability for viewers and to assist Sky to meet continued demand for EPG slots. Better sign posting will help make it easier for viewers to find the programme and channels that they want to watch."
The EPG menu will have two new genres; Lifestyle & Culture along with Gaming & Dating.
The confirmed EPG menu will appear as follows:

The new parental controls will be available to all Sky and Sky Plus boxes by Summer 2005. The upgrade will not require any new equipment and will carried out by Sky for no additional charge. Sky says the new parental control features will be introduced in two phases:
Phase 1—Using the Sky remote control, parents will be able to restrict viewing to any digital satellite channel including free-to-air channels and un-rated programmes. They will be able to choose whether to restrict access at all times or to prevent viewing only after 8pm. To unlock access to a restricted channel, a household member will have to enter a unique four-digit PIN number using the Sky remote control.
Phase 2—For the first time, parents will be able to remove all listings for adult channels from the Sky Guide. To reinstate the adult channels to the Sky Guide, the four-digit PIN code is required. I've left room for +1 channels in genres that tend to have such channels. And I've tried to group channels from the same company together. Arguably the list within each genre should be more spread out to enable future channels from the same company to be grouped with existing channels - but how much space to leave is anyone's guess.
I've generally used the genres already announced by Sky - and in the order announced by Sky - but I have added regional and information genres.
I have included (marked *) a number of channels that are likely to launch between now and the autumn - though this is not comprehensive (for obvious reasons)

The only thing I dont like about Disco's line-up, there isn't much room for new radio stations to be added. I mean, I know that Disco has left about fourty slots for new stations. But with how often radio stations launch, this would soon get used.

The advantage of this over my original suggestion is that each genre's number on the menu would be the number of the first digit of the channel (including entertainment - which wasn't under my list). Entertainment, movies, sports and news would also start with the same digit as at present which may be helpful to some. Although there are only 100 slots for entertainment channels, that should be ample now that all the dross that currently goes under that genre can be put elsewhere.
Also a good point about the channel 4 regions - If they're not needed then leave them out. But this is clearly where any future regional variations of channel 4 would go.

What will happen in the future if Sky want other channels other than radio ones to have four digit numbers. Will they make it so when you press the 0 button it puts up a little icon showing a 1 rather than the radio icon. then you will be able to select channels 1001-1999. Could this idea be used in the future?
And Shouldn't the Welsh channels be in the Foreign Language Section
The foreign channels should be slotted into the relevant sections...... Zee Music should be in the music section and so on. This way we will have a properly intergrated system.

Could they not put all the radio stations under a single epg, which will pop up on a interactive screen... ie similar to music choice.
working with 0xxx would work well.. 0101 BBC1, 0501 Sky News, 0301 Sky Movies 1, 0401 Sky Sports 1
and all the other crap nobody watchs like shopping (1101) and adult (1201) etc etc.
