Bits of Radio news

Ofcom is looking to make three new blocks of spectrum in Band III (174-230 MHz) available for new local DAB multiplexes. This would ensure every region in the UK had at least one digital multiplex. Ofcom was now consulting on a further one, "or even two" national multiplexes, "and digesting, carefully, the responses they have received" before reaching a decision this summer. More space for innovation and convergence will be available in the L-Band spectrum (1452-1492 MHz): 16 blocks of DAB compatible spectrum, which they plan to release next year. (From dtg.org)

HiDef TV – HDTV SECTION

Sky has appointed Thomson as the initial manufacturer of the set-top box for its forthcoming High Definition Television service and confirmed that it is on track to launch in 2006. Sky's Chief Operating Officer, has said that Sky's HDTV box would feature a similar Personal Video Recorder capability to the existing Sky+ box., saying that offering PVR capability as a standard in the HDTV arena will ensure that Sky+'s 6,000,000 subscribers would continue to enjoy control and flexibility in association with the highest-quality programming. Sky’s HD Website (From :- Advanced Television .com)

Sony has revealed that their 2004 range of "HD Capable" large screen LCD and plasma TV displays - which feature analogue component inputs instead of the "HD Ready" HDMI/HDCP inputs - will be able to be used with Sky's high definition television service when it launches.: Press release

 The EBU Technical Committee has recommended that Emission standards for HDTV should be based on progressive scanning: 720p/50 is currently the optimum solution, but 1080p/50 is an attractive option for the longer term. Although there are strong technical arguments in favour of progressive scanning for emission, the EBU Technical Committee recognises that some broadcasters might wish to broadcast 1080-I programme material. As consumer electronics equipment (e.g. set-top boxes and displays) will accept both 720p and 1080-I formats, broadcasters will be able to select either of these formats * even on a programme-by-programme basis. Taking into account that production and emission standards do not need to be identical, further EBU studies on Production standards for HDTV in Europe are in progress. This work is not intended to result in a recommendation for a single standard for HDTV production. ( From TeleSatellite)

As per the above the ASTRA HDTV Press releases are here
* Cable Ends *

Cable companies NTL and Telewest will tie the knot in a $12bn merger to create a pay-TV company big enough to take on Britain's dominant pay-TV operator Sky, (according to The Independent on Sunday.)
NTL will make a cash and shares offer for Telewest towards the end of this month, in what will be effectively a takeover, finally giving Telewest shareholders a return on their investment. The Independent on Sunday said it was "extremely unlikely" that the merger announcement would be delayed any further, and was expected towards the end of July. More Here

    The EPG info on 52260 doesnt seem like its for Speed Auctions TV. The EPG info on bid tv and price drop tv is totally different and i thought speed auctions tv would have similar EPG info to the other two sit up channels. The EPG info on 52260 suggests an entertainment shopping channel which only sells Games Consoles and DVD's.

    If Live! TV have bought the Musicians Channel i can imagine that the channels name will change and it will move to the Entertainment section of the EPG.

    The English-language channel Russia Today should be launching in September.
    http://www.sptimesrussia.com/archive/times/1076/top/t_15950.htm
    In the article, they don't say what satellite it will be on. They might put it on Hotbird because of its huge coverage as well as putting it on Astra 28° because that's where most English speakers are in Europe.
