The first European HD channel, HD-1 (formerly known as Euro 1080) will finally be launched in the UK in August!

Currently available from Astra 19.2°E (12168.00 MHz, pol.V SR:27500 FEC:3/4: SID:1081 ) and 23.5°E (10758.00 MHz, pol.V SR:22000 FEC:5/6 SID:1081 PID:308/256,257), HD-1 plans to be the first channel to offer a high definition service from 28.2°, the main position serving the UK.

Good news for techies but I doubt anyone will rush to buy their box and a subscription as it's still unclear wether their system will be compatible with Sky's...
They currently use Irdeto2 scrambling.

It's only £27 a year which ain't too bad, but it's only one channel.

Of course - we'd still need a Qualitv box and a Sky box. Normally I don't mind, but being HD these are 2 expensive bits of kit.

It would make a lot of sense for both companies to offer the service direct to the people who buy the SKY+ HD service, more content either bundled with an existing package or as a standalone and no need to have two HD STB's.

HD-1 has been being broadcast for ages? This is just a move of satellite.

Currently HD-1 is broadcast MPEG 2 though, not H.264 as Sky is using.

Yes they have from 19.2 in mpeg2 but they are going to mirror the original service on 28.2 in mpeg4 and SKY are one of the partners listed on the EURO0180 website.
So you would expect that once SKY launch their service that a full mpeg4 lineup from EURO1080 will arrive.
I would assume they are using mpegII simple because of the lack of mpeg4 STB's on the market at this time and the capacity has already been secured (it was slated for launch in June).

    - Transmission in MPEG4: Later this year Euro1080 will transmit simultaneously in MPEG4 both on HD1 and HD2.
