Is this really HDTV?

Normally my aging Humax F1 FTA ignores any HDTV signal but in recent weeks I have noticed a test channel on Hotbird 13E, 11642H 27.5 3/4 which claims to be HDTV. (Hellas HDTV)

Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine HDTV signal, and if so why this signal alone can be resolved by my receiver?

I don't think so - I can also watch this up on my MPEG2 box, but not the other HDTV broadcasts.

Thanks for confirmation of that, 2fabiola

The picture seems a little jerky, like the box can't quite cope with it. Could this be some kind of experimental broadcast to try to get a higher definition out of a standard broadcast?

It could be a HD channel broadcasting by MPEG2, not MPEG4 which is normally used by HDTV broadcasts. So, yes it could be HD.

Through a DVB-S card in my PC, it does only seem to be SD so far. Maybe it will become HD, but I guess it's advertising a forthcoming service.

The only high definition character of Hellas HDTV is.... the name
On HotBird the only HD real signal is from the French HD Forum Promo at 11242V, 27500, 3/4

Well, I've got a twinhan one (1022a), and I would say avoid them. Or at least this generation of producs. They overheat and then don't supply power to the LNB. Happens even worse with the test HD transmissions.
The Skystar cards cost a little more, but I haven't heard as many problems with them.

I will, replace it when DVB-S2 cards come onto the market next year. Otherwise I would allready have replaced it.

I think I'll have to take a look at the HDTV forum for further information about cards etc..

    Many Thanks
